Future Posts - Live Material Needed

I am putting out a call to all old managers, promoters, bands, band members, roadies and fans.

This blog is set up for one thing only.

That is to preserve the music that made Australia... a chance for the punters to relive the live music experiences they grew up with. A way of capturing that one point in time when music was at its best in this country.

We are the generation that can make a difference and do something to save those precious moments.
In a few years where will your old tapes and recordings be... landfill probably.
And that is why I created this site.

That sort of stuff MUST be preserved before it's too late.

You lived and breathed that music scene once and many still do... let others share your passion.

There are more fans and enthusiasts still out there than you may think!!!

Please contact me if you have anything... be it audio, video or photo that can be added here.

Future posts already planned will include...

more Short Story at various venues

Midnight Oil - 1982 The Pier Hotel and The Old Lion

Billy Field - 1981 Brisbane Festival Hall

The Little Heroes - 1982 Toowoomba

Mondo Rock - similcast

Australian Crawl - similcast

Australian Crawl - second EVER gig

Redgum - more binaural tracks from Collingwood Town Hall

Dynamic Hepnotics -

and there will be an odd one as it will not be an Aussie artist....
that will be The Motels Live at Sydney Entertainment Centre

Music Download Instructions

It has come to my attention that many people are not aware of how this and other music blogs function.

So, I am creating these instructions to make it easy.

Firstly, before anything you will need to download and install this software. This only has to be done ONCE... then when it is  installed on your computer you will be ready for the next step.   Instructions for similar software for a MAC is included below...

For Windows users you will need to download a program such as WinRAR.  This is a free program and a copy is available by clicking the following link.  WinRAR

If you have a MAC, then the program to unpack the files is Stuffit Expander and comes with your operating system.

If you can't locate Stuffit Expander then the following link will give you a free MAC application that will do the job quite well.   RAR Expander

At the bottom of each post on the blog there is a textual link.  Usually it will be the name of the band or of the title of the album. IT should be fairly obvious and on my blogs will always be at the bottom of the relevant post.

Simply click on that text link and it will open a link in another window.   That link will usually be to Megaupload but can sometimes be 4Shared.

In the top right corner of the Megaupload page there will be a series of  3 letters and 1 number to be typed into a box.  They are quite easy to locate.  Other bogs can use various sites like Rapidshare or Fileshare and numerous others.  They all work the same way.  Rapidshare and others will make you wait up to 15 minutes between each download.

That box will then give you a countdown timer of usually under 60 seconds.  This can vary.   Once the timer is finished then click on the download link.
The download of the "album"  will then commence.  The time for the actual download will depend on your connection speed to the internet.

The entire album is saved in one file as a RAR file to make the size of the download smaller.

As long as you have followed the instructions and installed the software in the first step it is simply a matter of clicking on the downloaded music file and it will open a box within the program... such as WinRAR.   You can then place the files wherever you wish on your computer.

From there you can do several things such as unpack the entire archive to be able to transfer it to your hard drive, then a CD or MP3 player or simply play through your computer speakers.

Pseudo Echo - Live 1985

This listing is a live desk recording of Pseudo Echo from sometime late in 1985, probably December.

From recollections the recording can only be narrowed down to either The Palace in St Kilda or Monash Uni.

It is believed that Aaron Chugg was the FOH engineer.

I first saw Pseudo Echo on the 16th of November 1982 as a support band when I was working for The Little Heroes.  The venue was The Jump Club in Collingwood.

The following information is a extract from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudo_Echo

Formed in 1982 by school friends Brian Canham (vocals, guitars, and keyboards) and Pierre Gigliotti (bass, keyboards) the band completed its lineup with Anthony Argiro (drums) and Tony Lugton (guitars and keyboards).

Their first album Autumnal Park was an Ultravox-influenced album that yielded the Australian singles "Listening" (produced by Peter Dawkins), "Stranger in Me", "Dancing Till Midnight", and "A Beat for You".

Their climb to success in the summer of 1984 was rapid, and they quickly became the second biggest band in Australia after INXS.

"His Eyes", a track from their first album, received exposure overseas as it was used in the movie Friday the 13th: A New Beginning.

There was a lineup change before their second album with Tony Lugton being replaced by James Leigh (real surname: Dingli) after a dispute between Lugton and Canham over money, and another lineup change during the making of the second album with Argiro being replaced by James's brother Vince.

Lugton went on to join synth rock band Talk That Walk.

Brian Canham joined as guest vocalist with The Incredible Penguins in 1985, for a cover of "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)", a charity project for research on Fairy penguins, which peaked at #10 on the Australian Kent Music Report in December.

Their second album, Love an Adventure (1986), was also a success with several singles from that album topping the Australian charts including the title track, "Don't Go", "Try", and "Living in a Dream".

The album was re-released the following year to include their remake of the Lipps, Inc. song "Funkytown", which brought the group their biggest international success, reaching No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA and No. 8 in the UK in July, 1987, as well as spending seven weeks at #1 in Australia from December 1986.

The overseas release of Love an Adventure featured a somewhat different track listing which included re-mixed versions of 3 singles from Autumnal Park: "Listening", "A Beat for You", and "Destination Unknown".

These were remixed to sound more rock-oriented, to better-match the other tracks on the album. Brian Canham even re-recorded the vocals for a slicker sound to compliment these rock remixes.

Once again, the overseas version of Love an Adventure was re-released to include the re-make of "Funkytown", replacing "Don't Go" in the original track list.

In 1987, the band re-released "Listening" for the movie North Shore starring Nia Peeples.

Their third album, Race (1989), went further in the direction of pop rock and metal.

The album featured the Australian singles "Fooled Again", "Over Tomorrow", "Eye of the Storm", and "Don't You Forget".

The album stopped at #32 on the ARIA chart and it seemed that the band's move to a more rock/metal genre had alienated a good portion of their established fanbase.

Pseudo Echo disbanded shortly after touring for Race in 1990.

The band reunited in 1999 to produce the EP Funkytown Y2K: RMX, which included 6 new remixes of "Funkytown".

A year later, they released the double-CD Teleporter (2000), which featured 4 all-new tracks, 5 re-mixed tracks, and a live performance in Melbourne.

The live performance featured all the tracks from Autumnal Park except for "From the Shore", along with a few tracks from Love an Adventure and a performance of the rare B-side "In Their Time".

Since reuniting in 1999, the band has been touring constantly in Australia, and were previously seen touring with the "Idols of the 80s" in 2005.

In April 2010 they played two sold out shows in Adelaide, South Australia, and they continue to tour nationwide.

This is really great representation of the band in its heyday. I'm positive that fans of the Pseudo's will love this....  the recording actually predates their release of Funk Town.

Thanks to "Linus Prodd" for this amazing blast from the past.  Love your work mate!!

The line up at the time of this live recording was :-

Brian Canham - vocals and guitar

Steve Grace - One Night In A Million

The following is taken directly from the Steve Grace website at www.stevegrace.com
You can find out lots more information on Steve on that site.

Twenty years ago he was driving trucks and singing in bars.
Today, Steve Grace is an Australian Gospel artist with eight albums and a million miles of concert tours behind him.
Communicating to thousands of people each year his tours literally go anywhere and everywhere, from remote villages on South Pacific islands, to major venues in big cities.

Steve Grace is one of Australia’s leading contemporary Christian musicians.

In 1996, the Gospel Music Association of America voted Steve as the International Artist of the Year and the Australian radio industry has awarded him two Pater awards for songwriting.

Australia’s biggest selling country music performer, Slim Dusty, honored Steve by recording Port Augusta for his 100th album.

Steve’s album Children of the Western World (1988) achieved gold status in Australia.

It was the first Christian album by an Australian artist released on CD.

The album, Follow, was recorded in Los Angeles and features members of the Franklin Graham Festival Praise Band.

His latest album is New Day Coming, recorded in 2004.

Steve’s music has been released in the USA, New Zealand (Parachute) and Australia (Word Australia), and is available to order online or download on the iTunes Music Store.

This soon became the resource material for Steve’s debut album Young Australian Man (1986).

Steve felt the call to leave truck driving and move to Melbourne with his wife and children.
There he began working on a second album Children of the Western World (1988) with the Little River Bands, Beeb Birtles.

This became one of the biggest selling Christian albums in Australia, and the largest by a contemporary artist. US company Reunion issued the album, which spawned several radio hits including Big Dreams and Children of the Western World .  It was also released in Canada, Europe, and the UK.

True to his missionary upbringing, Steve pioneered a concert touring ministry to Australian country towns in the early 90’s, traveling the vast expanses of the Australian continent to serve local churches in their task of reaching people with a contemporary message of hope and faith.

Steve Grace is currently on the road across the country on his Heritage National Tour

The Little Heroes - Live 26/11/82

Back in 1982 I was a monitor (foldback) engineer for the Melbourne band The Little Heroes.  I was lucky enough to tour most of Australia with the band and had such a great time that the memories still bring a smile to my face.

I have just added a live show performed by The Little Heroes at St Kilda Town Hall on the 26th November 1982. Ross Frazer (John Farnham's producer) was the FOH engineer. I was working monitors.

The first and last songs of the show were not included as they were not complete. Personally I'm sad about that because the first song was Melbourne's Just Not New York... and that was one of my favourite songs from the band live.

The link to this live show is here ...
The Little Heroes Live at St Kilda Town Hall 26/11/82

The recording is in 320kbps MP3 format.

I can still remember this clip below being recorded at Countdown.

I saw the singer / songwriter, Roger Hart from the band online recently on  Facebook and decided to scan some photos from those days to show him.

The main set of photos were taken on my last night working with the band... 1st January 1983, at the Armadale Hotel, Melbourne.

I have made those photos available for the visitors to this site at GruntRat's Photos on PhotoBucket

Short Story - Melbourne Band - Pre Girl Overboard - Lisa Schouw

In 1981 Lisa Schouw auditioned as a vocalist for Melbourne band “Pointz”.

It was in this band that she met Robin Gist for the first time.

Over a period of two years the band changed its name to “Short Story”, played around Melbourne, almost secured a publishing and recording deal with Wheatley Records and finally self-destructed.

Lisa went back to New Zealand for about six months, but decided to return to Australia and met up with Robin to begin writing songs.

After auditioning various players they settled on keyboards player Brett McNaughton and together the three formed “Separate Tables” in 1987.

The line-up was augmented by Lee Davidson on drums and Jenny Milroy on backing vocals and percussion.

The band released an independent single - “Long Dark Night” backed with “Wrap Your Arms Around Me”.

After a year of writing and gigging the band secured a recording deal with RCA/BMG, a gig as the support act for John Farnham’s “Jack’s Back” tour and spent months on the road promoting the single “When The Word Came Down” playing Entertainment Centres and concert halls around Australia.

The next single “Change My Sex” was largely ignored by radio.

John Favaro joined the band on bass guitar and another single - “Wrap Your Arms Around Me” was released.

The band began recording their debut album “Paint a Picture” with producer Ross Fraser at Metropolis Studios in Melbourne.

After leaving Little Heroes in 1983 , I was offered the front of house gig with Short Story and spent the next 12 or so months working with them.

Short Story had a few residency's around Melbourne at the time... including The Chevron Hotel in St. Kilda Road and a popular Saturday arvo gig at The Prospect Hill Hotel in Kew.

They were also a regular at the Billboard nightclub in Melbourne.

Much of this information has been gathered from Lisa Schouw's personal website at www.lisaschouw.com

Rob Gist the guitarist has a website for his Sydney recording studio, Tonemaster Productions

This is a link to the Girl Overboard - Paint A Picture album on my TrashedByTime blog.

This was the last show of a run of Saturdays as the resident band at the Prospect Hill Hotel in Kew, Victoria.

This was recorded on the 14th May 1983.

I have preserved the recording "as is"... some instruments went through the mixing desk... some were loud enough on stage to be left out of the mix.

I truly do encourage you to listen to the whole show as I feel it starts off a little shaky but certainly gets better after the band has warmed up.

Some songs are covers. eg: The Police, Blondie... some originals.

My favourite song is track 11, Golden Angel.  I also like track 13, Riviera.

Golden Angel sure shows off the range of Lisa's voice!!

I will be releasing several different shows that I have on tape over the next few weeks.  Most will contain the same songs but the PA's being different can change the sound drastically.

On this recording there are 20 tracks in all... :-

A Place In The Sun
I Can't Feel
No Time
Doors Of Fate
I Can't Stand Losing You
Call Me
Pie In The Sky
People On A Train
I See You
Take A Look
Golden Angel
Whispers
Riviera
Reflections
Inside My Head
She Never Lets You Know
Accident Never Happen
Home Is Where The Heart Is
End Of The Line
Streetwalker

I hope you enjoy the show......

A Little Bit Of History - Hard Rock Cafe Flyer - Melbourne 1974

I have recently began to track down old mates from the 70's. Just gotta love the wonder of the internet.

My old mate "Milly" was a guy in our circle that I hung out with a hell of a lot back in those days and he sent me something I wish to share with you that you may find interesting.

Thanks Milly...

Firstly, I'd like to ask any of you out there if you can recall any of the many names that were applicable to the old venue at number 1 Spring Street Melbourne.

I can recall Berties and Hard Rock Cafe (not to be confused with the current Hard Rock) but I am curious as to the other names.  One name that keeps springing to mind is Blaises.

This flyer is for Hard Rock Cafe and covers the months entertainment.

The flyer is for October 1974.

You will note on it that it must have been one of AC/DC's first Melbourne gigs as they were billed as AC DC (from Sydney). Turns out this was approximately a month after Bon Scott joined as singer.

I am absolutely amazed that this single flyer contains so much history in what bands were playing in a single month in just one venue in Melbourne.

Combine that in itself with the fact that there were many, many venues of similar calibre on at the same time in Melbourne, cementing the town's place as the rock capital of Australia.

I hope this little gem from the past brings back a few memories for some of you.

Ohhh... and I was at the venue most Fridays and Saturdays at the time and was lucky enough to be in the audience for the second last show... with AC/DC slaying a crowd that had never seen them before. All for a lousy $2.10.

Anyway... enough waffling... here's the link for the flyer, supplied in PDF format.

Glyn Mason - Live At The Moonee Ponds Tavern - 1980

This was recorded at the Moonee Ponds Tavern one night when Glyn supported Spectrum when they first reformed some time after Ariel.

Sadly the whole table I was seated at was removed from the premises (and I SWEAR it wasn't my joint) before Spectrum came on that night and I didn't get a recording of them.

The photo above was taken around the time of this recording.

Track 1 - Looking Across The Water
Track 2 - Georgia On My Mind
Track 3 - Music For Money
Track 4 - It's Only Love
Track 5 - Desperado
Track 6 - The Road
Track 7 - Say
Track 8 - Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues

Currently Glyn is still playing live in Melbourne with Sam See under the name of The Pardoners. Their website can be found HERE

The Dingoes Live At The Charles Hotel Perth - Photos

Saturday, 21st August,  I went to The Charles Hotel in North Perth and had the pleasure of seeing the classic Oz band, The Dingoes... reformed after 30 years perform.

The whole experience opened a floodgate of memories for me.

With a relatively small crowd for the venue of around 120 people we were thoroughly entertained with songs from their new album, Tracks and from their older songs that the crowd obviously knew and loved.

I have to admit that the first few playings of the new Tracks album didn't seem to grab me like previous recordings from the band had.  However... the more I have listened I have grown to love most of the tracks on the album.

Many thanks to the band for signing my copy of the album.

I took quite an array of over 200 photos on the night and most are available HERE on Photobucket for visitors to Trashed By Time.

This post has been relocated here from the ~~TrashedByTime~~ blog.

The photo below is Kerryn Tolhurst's Gretsch on the night... probably one of the best photos I have ever taken!

Rare Redgum Live

Back in the late 1970's I had the pleasure of attending a concert at Collingwood Town Hall in Melbourne. One of the artists performing was the Adelaide based band, Redgum.

This recording is of a "fill in" track that Redgum used at such times as when they broke a guitar string and had a short time to fill while they did a re-string.

This track was recorded in an unusual way... using Sennheiser Binaural Stereo Microphones mounted on a dummy recording head on the side of the mixing desk platform, direct to a Nakamichi Cassette Deck. It brings a live sound from near the rear of the room that has a clear, crisp quality, whilst still maintaining that ambience that can only be obtained from recording in the middle of an audience.

This is nothing like the Redgum songs you are used to... I hope you enjoy!!

Moving Pictures - EON - FM Live Similcast

I remember seeing Moving Pictures live many times in both Melbourne and Sydney in the 1980's,  but one night sticks out in my mind...

It was the Horden Pavillion in Sydney and Moving Pictures were support act to Elton John.

At the end of Moving Pictures set a strange figure walked up to the microphone.

It was Australian actor, Bruce Spence and he announced that England had just gone to war with Argentina.... and so The Falklands War began...

Funny how such things stick in your head after all these years.

Moving Pictures were one of my favourite acts over the years... and more so from their strong live performances than their recorded material.  We all had the records of course... but to see these guys live was something special.

For a full bio and information / discography on Moving Pictures here is a link to their Wikipedia info page

I was fortunate enough in my younger days to tape just about every bit of music I could. The unfortunate part is some thieves many years ago chose to relieve me of most of my collection.

This recording however survived all this time.  It is from an EON - FM  Stereo Home Box Office similcast.

My recording was done direct from a Kenwood tuner to a Nakamichi 482ZX cassette deck, which I was lucky enough to have at the time.   The thing about Nakamichi's is if you used a decent quality tape you didn't lose much of the original sound.

This show was done just before the release of their second album Matinee, which hit the shelves in October 1983.

I have tried to cut the tracks at points I personally thought appropriate... but it should be noted that sometimes due to cutting out of adverts and station signatures it  made the cutting sound rather abrupt at certain points. Unfortunately that could not be helped.

here is an actual clip from this similcast....

Anyways... I present for your enjoyment 11 tracks from Moving Pictures.

Track list :-

Round Again
It Must Be Love
Sisters Of Mercy
Nothing To Do
Wings
Angels
So Tired
Sweet Cherie
What About Me?
Angel And The Madman
Bustin' Loose

I truly hope you turn up the volume and enjoy these great tracks.

Moving Pictures Live on Stereo Home Box Office

Welcome

Welcome to my new blog, Live Preserver...
we are here to do nothing but preserve live music for the future generations!!

This site will contain nothing but live recorded Australian music and photos.

The recordings will come from various sources..... some similcasts, some live straight from the mixing desk.

These recordings are a warts and all glimpse into a band in live performance

I am appealing to any Australian band from the 60's to now that if you'd like a representation of your live performance to be showcased then this is the blog for you.

The first post on this new blog is an EON - FM / Stereo Home Box Office similcast of Moving Pictures live in 1983.

It features the big hit... What About Me?... and my own personal favourite The Angel And The Madman
